Can Belgium’s talented midfield inspire the Red Devils to victory against Team Melli in a pivotal Group G showdown?

Set against the backdrop of Southern California, SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, USA, is set to host a highly anticipated Group G clash in Matchweek 2 of the FIFA World Cup 2026, as European giants Belgium take on Iran in what promises to be an intriguing contest.

Group G remains finely poised after both opening fixtures ended in draws. Belgium and Iran each sit on one point, meaning a victory in this encounter could significantly boost either side’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages. With the group still wide open, every point and goal could prove decisive.

Belgium were fortunate to come away with a point from their opening match against Egypt. The Pharaohs struck first through Emam Ashour, putting the 2018 World Cup semi-finalists under pressure. However, Romelu Lukaku made an immediate impact after coming on, finding the equaliser in the 66th minute to rescue a draw for the Red Devils.

The veteran striker nearly completed the comeback late in the game but failed to convert a promising header that could have secured all three points against the seven-time African champions.

Belgium are now under the guidance of French manager Rudi Garcia, who has brought renewed energy and direction to the squad. Despite a difficult spell during his previous stint at Napoli, Garcia has made a positive start with the Red Devils and will be aiming to guide them to a crucial victory in this pivotal Group G encounter.

Match Prediction

Iran have consistently shown their ability to compete with stronger opponents despite the challenges they face. While Team Melli are expected to put up a resilient and disciplined performance, Belgium’s superior squad depth and creativity in midfield could ultimately prove decisive. The Red Devils possess the quality needed to edge a closely contested encounter and take a significant step towards the knockout stages.

Prediction: Belgium 2-1 Iran

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international men's soccer championship contested by the national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The tournament will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026.[1] It will be jointly hosted by sixteen cities—eleven in the United States, three in Mexico, and two in Canada. The tournament will be the first FIFA World Cup to be hosted by three nations, and the first to include 48 teams, an expansion from 32 previously.

The United 2026 bid beat a rival bid by Morocco during a final vote at the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow. It will be the first World Cup since 2002 to be co-hosted by multiple nations. With its past hosting of the 1970 and 1986 tournaments, Mexico will become the first country to host or co-host the World Cup three times. The United States previously hosted the World Cup in 1994. By contrast, it will be Canada's first time hosting or co-hosting the tournament. The event is returning to its traditional Northern Hemisphere summer schedule after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar was uniquely held in November and December.

As the host nations, Canada, Mexico, and the United States all automatically qualified. Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan will all make their World Cup debuts. Argentina is the defending champion, having won its third World Cup title in 2022.

Preparations for the tournament have drawn controversy, particularly over United States immigration and visa policies affecting qualified teams and their fans, Iran's participation during the 2026 Iran war, and FIFA's use of dynamic ticket pricing.
